CHARACTER
Character Name: Irisviel von Einzbern
Character Age: 9, but she was created as an adult and has the appearance/temperament of a woman in her mid-20s. I’d peg her at between 24 and 26.
Canon: Fate/ series (Fate/Zero specifically)
Canon Point: The end of the Grail War in Fate/Zero
History: Now that I play from Fate, I’ll never have to write out another history section again!
Personality: Nobody would have expected a homunculus to have this much personality.

Originally born with no emotions, no sense of self, and no purpose but fulfilling her role as the Holy Grail, Irisviel began her life with little personality to speak with, essentially a vessel committed to her duty. Kiritsugu’s tutelage and affection and her experiences as a wife and mother filled that emptiness with a caring, nurturing personality intent on maximizing her time with her family and working to uphold a better future for her daughter, even if she couldn’t be there to see it. Curious, intelligent, and quite vivacious, Irisviel is mostly happy to meet people and have experiences that she never thought she’d have, savoring them with the knowledge that she’ll likely never experience them again. Little things like dipping her feet in the ocean or exploring an Eastern-style house are extremely exciting to her because she has been kept isolated for her entire life; she knows that these moments are precious and fleeting. There’s little as precious to her, then, as her family. Irisviel is one of those women who was fundamentally changed by motherhood, and one of her chief motivations is to give her daughter a better future even if her own is already set in stone. To do this, she’ll support her husband in everything—she loves him unrelentingly, even to the point of overlooking his flaws. So Kiritsugu could stay hidden and do his work as an assassin throughout the war, she played the role of Master to his summoned servant, Saber (King Arthur) in public. Given Kiritsugu’s hesitance to speak with his own Servant, she became their communication liason as well, becoming quite close to Saber until they referred to one another as princess and knight, respectively.

Though she’s quite clever, Irisviel’s limited exposure to the outside world does make her ignorant in some ways. Most mages eschew unnecessary technology, so she has had limited contact with things like fax machines, radios, and cell phones (also, she was alive in the 80s and 90). Even her Mercedes, a gift from her husband to familiarize her with technology, was a “toy” long before it had any practical use for her. Her views on money are far from realistic, given that she’s had so much of it. While her education in current affairs, history, and culture broadened her range of knowledge extensively, there are still many areas where even her education fails her. When purchasing more “modern” clothes for herself and Saber so they could more easily blend in while in Japan, she ended up purchasing color-coordinated, very elite upper class clothing. (The drama CDs go a step further with this: Before the fancy clothes, Irisviel picked out kimono instead, believing they were still the dominant Japanese fashion.) All said, she’s quite weird, but it’s charming.

Irisviel is vibrant in her personality, but that quality is tempered by her purpose and the stakes of the Grail War. Knowing the consequences of her life, Irisviel can go from extroversion to reservation quite quickly. Watching her husband withdraw to prepare himself for the end of the war, knowing that she will no longer see her daughter even if they succeed, she tones herself down in turn, keeping whatever secrets she must keep and putting her attentions on the future. It seems that she would be extremely energetic and have a loud sense of humor were she given the chance to live normally. The possibility for a brighter, more eccentric Irisviel—however unreachable—can be seen in her behavior when she and Saber first arrive in Fuyuki: They have one day to enjoy the sights, and she does so with almost electric gung-ho. Other canon materials, like the Einzbern Consultation Room, reinforce the likelihood that she often keeps a lid on at least some of her vigor for the sake of duty.

Despite her kindness, Irisviel isn’t toothless, either. She’s mature and stubborn, willing to take a more active approach to a problem even when it might jeopardize her safety. She faces down Kirei Kotomine and even manages to get the advantage over him for a few seconds despite not being suited for combat. Even when placed in threatening situations, she chooses to stand rather than flee whenever possible, such as during the first five-Servant fight or when attempting to destroy Caster’s abomination of a final form. Irisviel also has an emotional limit despite her general patience. Finally exposed to Kiritsugu’s dishonorable killing methods when they lead to an absolute slaughter of one of the opposing teams, she snaps at him for his callousness and reluctance to communicate with his own Servant—she’s finally seen the effect lapsing into his past self has had on his conduct and morals. Furthermore, she has no patience for Kirei (him again; she really does not like this guy), and manages to verbally spit on his twisted ideals—as well as the idea that he’s even remotely like her husband—even while he is killing her.

While Irisviel technically died as soon as her body reverted to the grail, and the “Irisviel” personality serving as a manifestation of the grail’s wish was mostly a borrowed persona, it is suggested in-canon and confirmed by author interviews that her consciousness was still hanging around until the grail was completely destroyed by Excalibur. Since I’m bringing her from that point, I’m assuming that her consciousness would have been around to watch the grail’s ideals warp Kiritsugu’s wish, then to watch him reject those ideals by murdering proxies of herself and their daughter. I’m making this assumption in the hopes that it would give her some more things for Fear to pray on and also because I think it will be interesting to overcome. The knowledge of that failure and concern for her daughter’s future in that world will be hard for Iri to deal with. It could also be a good starting point for her to start thinking about her own convictions and goals.
Inventory: Absolutely nothing. For modesty’s sake, I guess, she’ll have the clothes on her back; she’ll be wearing an outfit identical to the one she was before her body dissolved into the grail.
Abilities: Irisviel has a strong talent for magic and a substantial mana pool, allowing her to cast quite frequently while drawing on a lot of energy. Because she’s a homunculus, she doesn’t need to eat to survive (though if exposed to good food, she’ll probably love it and throw herself into learning cooking immediately). As long as she has enough magical juice to keep going, she doesn’t need any other sustenance—which isn’t to say she doesn’t enjoy indulging in some of those more human activities. As the Einzbern family focuses on Alchemy as their magic, all of her skills are consequently Alchemy-based as well.

+ She is most proficient in healing magic. (This is alchemy because we say it’s alchemy, I guess—because it involves changing the condition of the body.) This is mostly limited to physical damage to the body but nevertheless is quite a strong talent. She can bring someone back from death’s door as long as she gets to them within a short period of time (probably, ballpark, half an hour to an hour). While she has to be near the person she’s healing in order to use this magic, she doesn’t necessarily have to put her hands on them for it to have an effect—it helps, though.

+ In addition to her capacities for healing, Irisviel is also quite skilled with transmutation. This power is the closest thing she has to offensive magic, though it could, presumably, be used for other things. This power manifests in the creation and control of many long, malleable wires that she can warp and control by channeling magic through them. Irisviel can conjure and control many at one time and create intricate designs and even familiars (like her bird) with them. They are also not easily severed and can physically bind someone.

+ She can drive a car! The reason this is an ability and not an everyday skill is that she can drive a car like a bat out of hell. She doesn’t obey any traffic laws or do things like brake unnecessarily. But nobody dies! Actually, she might not be that great of a driver, after all… But she can go very fast.

+ Her body is also, you know, the well-hidden flesh prison for a magical goblet, but who knows if Hope thought about that when reviving her in physical form.
Flaws: At first blush, Irisviel’s flaws aren’t readily apparent. Dig a little deeper, however, and they are definitely there. The biggest, unfortunately, has less to do with her own actions and more to do with the circumstances of her form. Since Irisviel was tainted by the sum of all the world’s evils when the grail appeared from her body, she has, however superficially, been stained with all the hatred, jealously, fear, suffering, and desperation that those curses had to offer. Essentially, she is very flawed because her personality was absorbed by an aggregation of the universe’s bad things and worn as a mask.

However, even as a distinct being, Irisviel has her own flaws. She seems to be accepting of her husband’s infidelity, under a guise if understanding why he has to do what he must. Seems is the important word here, of course. There’s actually quite a lot of pain and jealousy simmering under the surface there, and she lashes out at cheaters in extra-canonical materials. Also, she abandoned her child—even if the circumstances were beyond her control, nobody looks kindly on childhood abandonment, right?

Given the overwhelming wealth she was brought up with, she’s bad with money and wouldn’t know what being economical was if it kicked her. Her desire for things, experiences, and knowledge could be seen as quite greedy.

Finally, almost all of her conviction are based on someone else’s. She has a limited worldview as far as to what she believes for herself. Her inability to understand her own husband’s motivations led her to chronically lie to him about her own commitment to those same beliefs. Very terrible.
